Solid Shampoo has become a favorite for anyone wanting to cut down on plastic or for those who love the convenience of travel-friendly products.  I also love that they take up less space in the bathroom, last longer than liquid shampoo, and are mess-free.

When I first switched from liquid to solid shampoo, I noticed a huge difference in my hair. I used to wash it daily, but now I can go three to four days between washes depending on the season. Plus I found other benefits!

The beauty of making solid shampoo bars is the ability to combine anionic cleansing ingredients with cationic conditioning ingredients—something that isn’t possible in traditional emulsions without stability issues. By adding just the right balance of conditioning agents, these bars give hair the care it needs without leaving it greasy or flat.

This formula is suitable for all hair types and can easily be adapted to individual needs. Within the ingredients section, I’ve included alternatives and suggestions so you can tailor the bar for oily, dry, or other specific hair types.

I choose to use Sodium Coco Sulfate as the primary surfactant due to it being derived from natural sources. However, I understand that the word “sulfate” can raise concerns for many. It’s important to know that this term simply reflects the method used to extract fatty acids from coconuts with sulfuric acid, and it is not the same as other “sulfate” ingredients often associated with harshness.

That said, I recognize these concerns, so I’ve included some alternative surfactants you can try in your shampoo bars.

For best results, a pneumatic press is recommended to achieve consistently compact, durable bars with a smooth, professional finish. A manual hand press can also be used, though it may require more effort to achieve the same density.
