Solid shampoos have grown in popularity, but not everyone has access to a pneumatic press to create compact, long-lasting bars. While some people manage good results with a hand press, it can be difficult to achieve the same consistency.

When I first started making solid shampoo, pressing wasn’t yet common practice. Instead, I melted the ingredients together and poured them into silicone moulds. While effective, the bars were messy to make and never looked particularly appealing.

After releasing my Pressed Shampoo formula, I received many requests for a version that didn’t require a press. The challenge lay in finding the right balance between cleansing agents and hardening ingredients. Too often, the hardeners reduced the effectiveness of the cleansers, leading to minimal lather—something customers weren’t willing to compromise on. After much trial and error, I finally developed a solid shampoo that not only holds its shape throughout its life but also delivers the rich, satisfying lather customers expect.

The beauty of making solid shampoo bars is the ability to combine anionic cleansing ingredients with cationic conditioning ingredients—something that isn’t possible in traditional emulsions without stability issues. By adding just the right balance of conditioning agents, these bars give hair the care it needs without leaving it greasy or flat.

This formula is suitable for all hair types and can easily be adapted to individual needs. Within the ingredients section, I’ve included alternatives and suggestions so you can tailor the bar for oily, dry, or other specific hair types.

The formula is highly adaptable, with ingredient suggestions included so you can tailor the scent, colour, and active additives to suit your brand’s style and customer needs. Whether you’re creating a range for different hair types or adding your own signature fragrance blend, this recipe provides a reliable base for creative customisation.
